THEFT FROM WHARF ALLEGED Charged with the theft of three clothcutting imichities from the Wellington wharves, James Frederick Andrews, labourer, elected trial by jury and conducted his own etise when he appeared before Air, Stout. S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, The property was valued at £4l/10/(1 and belonged to the Federal .Stenin Navigation Co., Ltd. No evidence was called by Andrews, who was allowed bail. Evidence that accused had worked on tho waterfront was given by Selwyn Alfred Marryatl. A waferside worker, Thomas Lawrence, said that two machines similar to those described by other witnesses as being the property stolen hail been found near the door of one of tlie wharf sheds and given to the storeman. A machinery dealer from Christchurch, Edward John Hippelthwaite, said Andrews had called at his premises and offered to sell cloth-cutting machines. He had bought only one, which the police later took. He hud dealt with accused on several previous occasions.
