Needs Of Lower Hutt And Petone The provision of service chibs at Petone and Lower Hutt was referred to by Mr. J. W. Andrews, mayor.of Lower Hutt, at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday. He said there was only one small club at Ihe Hutt, which normally would only accommodate 100 couples and was being asked to take in 250 couples, while Petone was even worse off. This matter had been brought before the Metropolitan Committee, and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. H. Green, I'3. Wise and llimself had been appointed .to go into the matter and report. Mr. - Wise, mayor ot Eastbourne, was interested iu the matter as with the approach of the summer s-e-.i--son he thought something might be done round that way, and was examining the prospects of utilizing the Pavilion at Day’s Bay. now tenantless.
Mr. Andrews said be thought there was a prospect of getting land from the Lower Hutt City Council for a temporary building, ami, perhaps, gelling contributions to the material for Hint building, but ho could say nothing definite yet. He suggested that the matter be left to the subcommittee to report back. to the standing committee of the Provincial Council, ami that of the Metropolitan Committee, which had. substantially, the same membership, as they wanted to act as soon as possible. At the same time Mr. Andrews said they were not being “paniked" into doing anything costly, which might lateron prove'to be beyond the demand. In connexion with the use at weekends of the Day’s Bay Pavilion. Mr. Andrews said that the premises - were suitable but it was a matter of providing transport to get the men back to their camps after the Saturday night dances.
