Annual Meeting Of St. John Women’s War Committee When her Excellency Lady Newall attended the third annual meeting ot the Order of St. John Women’s War Committee in Wellington yesterday afternoon, she reeevied a shoulder spray of lovely flowers from a girl wearing a neat grey St. John uniform. .Mrs. I’. Fraser, the mayoress, Mrs. Hislop, who attended with the mayor, and Mrs. C. G. Morice, t icepresident, also received Howers. Captain Keauey, U.S.A., was also a special guest. Lady Elliott, president, welcomed her Excellency both as a friend ot and a worker with the St. Johns Womens War Committee. As a worker both for that and the Red Cross, Lady Newall would know the quiet way the women helpers came along and did what- had to be done so efficiently, the speaker said. Anyone connected -with the work for the Order of Kt.. John must be inspired by the ideals on which this ancient movement was founded, Lady Newall These were to defend the Christian faith and to serve the sick and wounded. Intelligence, .knowledge, temperance, justice, fairness and fortitude were required today just as they were in the times of the Crusades. The thanks of the community as a whole and of those who benefited from the work of the women’s committee were due to the members, said the mayor, for the work was of the greatest possible value. As head of the E.l’.S. organization in Wellington he specially thanked the women for preparing the bandages with which they had equipped the first aid posts in the city’ and suburbs. “You not only bring cookies and cakes, you -bring happiness and cheer to those away from home, you pep them up and make them feel better when depressed,” Captain Kenney' said in thanking members for their visits to -patients in a United Nations’ hospital. The staff and patients. deeply appreciated what was being done in this respect. The patients had asked him to extend their thanks to her Excellency and to Mrs. Eraser for the personal interest they had shown in each man during a recent visit to the hospital. Wherever New Zealand men were overseas, the speaker said he hoped they would be as hospitably’ received as United States servicemen had been in the Dominion. Mrs. Eraser thanked Captain Kenney for bis talk. Lady Elliott, who was re-elected president, thanked members, Mr. C. Meucheni, secretary of the -St. John Ambulance Association, and Miss Osborne for their help during the..year. Mrs. C. G. Morice was re-elected vice-president.
