As a worker both for that and the Red Cross, Lady Newall would know the quiet way the women helpers came along and did what- had to be done so efficiently, the speaker said. Anyone connected -with the work for the Order of Kt.. Intelligence, .knowledge, temperance, justice, fairness and fortitude were required today just as they were in the times of the Crusades. The thanks of the community as a whole and of those who benefited from the work of the women’s committee were due to the members, said the mayor, for the work was of the greatest possible value. As head of the E.l’.S. organization in Wellington he specially thanked the women for preparing the bandages with which they had equipped the first aid posts in the city’ and suburbs. “You not only bring cookies and cakes, you -bring happiness and cheer to those away from home, you pep them up and make them feel better when depressed,” Captain Kenney' said in thanking members for their visits to -patients in a United Nations’ hospital. The staff and patients. deeply appreciated what was being done in this respect. The patients had asked him to extend their thanks to her Excellency and to Mrs. Eraser for the personal interest they had shown in each man during a recent visit to the hospital. Wherever New Zealand men were overseas, the speaker said he hoped they would be as hospitably’ received as United States servicemen had been in the Dominion.
