HOSTAGES DIE IN ATHENS
German Terrorism PEOPLE HAIL DOOMED TWENTY (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —'Copyright.) (Received October 27, 7 p.m.) LONDON, October 26. After a series of bombs had been thrown in Athens, the German military commander, failing to discover the throwers, ordered the execution of 20 hostages, says a message from Ankara. These were marched half-naked through the streets with the firing squad before being shot.' The Germans hoped to frighten the population, but crowds cheered the hostages, shouting: “You are heroes! You will be avenged!” A message from the German frontier reports that a further IS Czechs have been executed for black market offences, black-out crimes, and also alleged espionage for the Allies. The Germans propose to conscript 200,000 Dutchmen into the German Army, says the Tass (Soviet) news agency, quoting a Stockholm report. Examining centres will be established ' in all important towns.
