TWO BURSARIES
Technical College Benefactions
Two benefactions which the Wellington Technical 'College is to receive were mentioned at a meeting of the college board of governors last night. It was reported that ex-classmates in last year’s post-matriculation class of Raymond Hughes, who died early this year, desired to commemorate him by establishing a bursary in music. They already had subscriptions for £3o* and hoped to raise at least £lOO.
Remarking that £lOO would not provide a very large annual income, the chairman, Air. AV. Appleton, suggested that the board subsidize the donations £1 for £l. This, he said, would encourage this and similar efforts’, the college being comparatively deficient in scholarships. The (board agreed to the proposal. The director, Air. R. G. Ridling, said it was gratifying to find young exstudents expressing in this way appreciation of the benefit they had received from the college.
Air. Ridling reported that Mrs. AL Harding had founded an engineering bursary as an appreciation of the work of the college in the training of engineering students’. Two of her children had studied at the college. The bursary, to be known as tlie Capetown Bursary, is to be awarded at the end of the third year to a student intending to proceed to Canterbury University College for further engineering studies, and is to be earned by a high standard of work. It will be paid to the bursar at the end of each term of the fourth year. The capital value is £5OO. Afembers of the board expressed appreciation of both benefactions.
