Rotorua Season To Open On Sunday BRISK SALE OF LICENCES For the fishing season in the Rotorua acclimatization district, to be opened on Sunday, tlie sale of licences over tlie past six weeks had been more than ordinarily brisk, said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, last night. The keen fisherman made part of the fishing season his annual vacation, and only a closed season would keep him away from his sport. Referring to the prospects for fishing in Rotorua and Taupo waters this season, Mr. Parry said the Conservator of Fish and Game, Mr. A. Kean, had reported that in spite of two months of Hooded streams, in Taupo in particular a fair number of sizable fish were to lie seen, a noticeable feature being an abundance of sprightly young specimens of between 141 b, aiid 31b. “In the Rdtoi'ua district,” continued Mr. Kean, in his report, "all the spawning streams are carrying large numbers of well-conditioned fish. In one inspection made it was noticed that the Ngongotaha stream and tributaries were carrying 95 per cent, of brown trout, but inter the rainbows began their run. At Hamurauu It has been ■noticed that there is a larger number of rainbow on tlie reeds than usual. The Ohau Channel carries a line lot of young fish. On October 18 quite a good rise was taking place of fish from -Jib. to 3lb. The same day there was a good rise of fish in Mission Bay. It was found they were feeding on smelt. In the Rotorua areas fish have been seen rising around the shores and well out into the lakes. “The Bay of Plenty rivers have been very high during the last three months and there is no doubt the rain that is falling at the time of reporting will affect them for the opening of the season. Reports oil AVaikaremoana state that the lake is exceptionally high and there are still large numbers of fish in all the streams.”
