KINDERGARTEN THE CHAMPION
Easy Win In Harcourt Stakes
SECOND DAY RECORDS AT TRENTHAM
(By The Watcher.)
Records were broken at Trentham yesterday on the second and .concluding day of the. Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. The pool of £19.559 on the Pearce Handicap was the largest ever recorded, and later in tliejlay, in the last race, the Belmont Handicap, it was eclipsed by a total of £19,768. ■ The day was fine, but as the result of rain in the morning the racing track was again very heavy, though it improved. The feature event, the Harcourt Stakes, gave Kindergarten, a hot favourite, a chance to display his class, and in the principal handicaps the winners were Gayest Son and Neenah. Mr. G. M. Currie won two races with Stairway and Rink, both bred by their owner, and trained by G. W. New. Form was fairly reliable, but there were one or two good prices, and that of Islam iu the two-year-old race was the best of the meeting.
The hurdle race was won narrowly by Siglow at double figures from the favourite, Kanui te Pai. Both led early but dropped in behind later. Siglow was with Student Prince and Cuisinier at the last fence, with Kanui te Pai handy, and in the run home Siglow was able to use his weight advantage to hold off the favourite, with Cuisinier a good third. Student Prince weakened and Just headed Aerobat for fourth. The Ashburton winner, Tutere, hit the front early in the running of the Trial Stakes and was always going too well for his opponents. Damask, always out in front with the winner, weakened a little, but was able to last long enough to beat the fast-finishiug Stourbridge, who was handy early but later went back a few places. Tavern Light was a moderate fourth, just heading Pedantic, King Scarf and Ngahape. The favourite, Bright Fox, was never a possibility. Only four ran in the Harcourt Stakes, which was only an • exercise gallop for Kindergarten. Rakanui allowed Representative to make the pace for a mile, and then went to the front, but he had uo chance with the champion, who won without effort. Gladynev finished better than Representative for third money. Stairway and Foxhaven ran away from the field ’at the finish of the hack distance event, Stairway staying the better. Stairway was well placed all the way as was 'Come True, who took the lead at the false rail hut could not see out the full journey. Foxhaven was toward the rear early. Sporting Sister, Alienate and Madame Rachel, prominent in all the running, did best of the others. Kinsman was always well back. A hot favourite in Soucy failed to finish in the first half-dozen in tile two-year-old handicap. She had every chance, but after leading from No. 1 to the last furlong with Sir Neri, she compounded and gave way to Carnfort.h, who in turn was downed narrowly by the fast-finishing Islam and Fairy Godmother, who came on locked together. Look Again was fourth, then Sir Neri and Marram. Gayest Son. who hnd been very unlucky on the first day. scored a decisive win in the Pearce Handicap. Always handy about fourth ho went after the pacemaker. Route March, frout the false rail, and soon had him in trouble. Deolali put up a good performance to get third. She dwelt at the start and lost ground, but had run up handy Into third iu behind Route March and Don’t Forget before they left the back stretch. Her effort was made too early and she was stopping at the finish. Nothing else had any chance, und Battledress laboured a long way in the rear throughout. Neenah scored an all-the-way and very easy wiu in tlie open seven. Jumping away smartly from No. 1. he was never headed nor ever looked likely to be. The Champ was handy throughout, but went under for second against Moutoa Bond, who lost a good position rounding the turn. John Gay and Augment did best of the others. Rink was responsible for an outstanding performance in winning the last race. Away back In the rear early, he was still second last at the half, but he unwound a wonderful run In the' straight to win going away from Daljarrock. who had headed the field coming into the straight. Alethea put iu a strong run. for third, with Arctic Night fourth, then Pompit, who had got left at the start.
