Justices In Uniform

Two justices of the peace wearing battledress presided over a sitting of the Magistrates’ Court in Auckland on Saturday morning. The two soldiers on the Bench were Lance-Corporal W. IL Blennerhassett and Private A. J. Dixon. Justices relieve magistrates on Saturday morning sittings, the Justices of the Peace Association arranging for members to take their turn.

Breaststroke Swimming. • The Royal Life-Saving Society, at ita annual meeting in Wellington, decided -o draw the attention of the Education Department and the iN.Z. Swimming Association to the desirability of giving even more attention to the correct teaching, ot breaststroke swimming in order to stimulate additional i-terest, in life-saving. Plane In Small Field. Bad visibility occasioned by low ram clouds caused an to land on the small sports area at King Edward Park, Stratford. The field is approximately 150 yards long and to land there was a skilful operation. The plane was undamaged. It was returned to an aerodrome by motor-lorry.

Field Gun In Shop. Breaking away from a towing lorry, a field gun and trailer crashed throngh a plate-glass window of a mens outfitters in Whangarei. N.Z. Forces Club in London. The National Patriotic Fund Board has been advised that because of the improvement in the club’s finances it is no longer necessary to accept contributions from the board toward the maintenance of the New Zealand Forces Club, London. At a meeting of the general committee of the New Zealand War Services Association, London, appreciation was expressed of the help given to the association by the Patriotic Fund Board, and it was decided to ask the board to accept a refund of the grants made in the past. These amount to £2812/5/0.

Labour Day Sports. The Labour Day sports, which were to have been held at Newtown -Park yesterday, had to be postponed because of the heavy fain in the morning. The committee met shortly before noon, and, as it was raining then, and there was no appearance of spectators, decided to postpone the gathering. The committee intends, if a ground is available, to hold the sports on Saturday next, probably on the Pirie Street reserve, as most of the other city reserves will be occupied by cricketers’. If a ground cannot be secured for Saturday next, the sports will be held on Saturday week.

Factory Labour Shortage. “If something is not done in the next three months the manpower position will become chaotic,” skid the chairmaii, Mr. W. J. Truscott, at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Manufacturers Association. Mr. Truscott said manufacturers were already handicapped by manpower shortages and had to JcKlgC appeals for men in camp. Czechoslovak Anniversary. October 28 will be celebrated by Czechoslovaks in New Zealand and all over the world as their day of independence. Tomorrow will mark the twenty-fourth anniversary of the day on which the Czechoslovak Tiepublie w-as reborn after nearly :100 years of darkness and oppression. The Czechoslovak Club, Wellington, in which all Czechoslovaks in Wellington nre united, will hold a commemoration tomorrow, and the following cable message has been sent to Dr. Eduard Benes, president of the Czechoslovak Government in England: “On occasion 28th October, please accept expression our deepest loyalty and profound conviction of the imminent success of your and our Government increasing work toward re-estaplisbrnent of our free Czechoslovakia. Truth shall prevail.”
