RACES AT TRENTHAM TODAY

Large And Representative Fields Promise Keen Contests REVIEW OF PROSPECTS (By The Watcher.) Large and. representative fields promise keen racing for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting which will be held at Trentham. Horses are present from north and. south, and as this will be the first clash of form between the two islands punters will be up against problems additional to those imposed-by the ordinary course of events. There has also been, much less racing this year than usual, so that there is not the same amount of form to go by. This will not detract from (lie lacing, which promises to be full of interest. The blustery weather of the past two or three days is not exactly promising, but unless there is further rain the going should be in good order.

The form horses for the Glen Hurdles Include Native Song, Kanul te Pai, Malacca and Taienta. 'Student Prince has not raced for a couple of months, but he has been working well at Hawera and is expected to be prominent. One or two of the lightweights have form, but it is not outstanding. Siglow jumps brilliantly and if he does not pull in the running he might be hard to beat. The Wellington Guinea® will see a record field. It contains the best form of both islands, including winners in Representative, Indian Sign, Botany, Foxhaven, Beau Vaals, Boulder Dam, John Gay, Theolateral and Broieveine, while certain improvers appear in Nizam, Dominate and Voltaire. Without the race it is impossible to declare which island has the superior form, though it looks like the north holding the advantage. For the open mile only the tail ot the field is -without form recommendation, and it should be a good race. Horses like Amigo, Gayest Son. Caroline Bay, Enrich and .possibly Ivar will appeal. Deolali, the topweight in the hack sprint, hurt herself a day or two ago and may not be a starter. If she has recovered and goes to the post she - will be one of the prime fancies. Alethea won well- in her only start, and though • she has a big weight for a three-year-old filly she should race well. Daljarrock seems to be on the improve, and Ex Pupil has only to run on a little 'better than she has been doing recently to be hard. Ladv Spiral, Farcical, Ngaha.pe, Theatre, -Banco. iManutere and Ring Scarf are winners or near winners with recent good. f °lt 3 is difficult to see the lightweight side of the Wellington iHandicap being able to defeat all the topweights, and punters will probably look for the first half-dozen to provide the winner. Battledress i® expected to improve on his Auckland showing where the going was unfavourable, but be -will have to step along to beat horses like Yogi and ißakanui, who have recently run .u,p to the 'best or their good class form. Gladynev is a likely improver on his recent showings. There are several of the lighter weights with good prospects, though it may be doubted if any is class enough for the Upweights. Among them can be included Foxsen, Clinch and Kinsman. Trentham being a track on which Centrepoise lias run some of his best races, one might include him in the possibilities, especially I£ the going should be soft. He will have to show a decided improvement, but it often pays at Wellington to view a horse in the light of bis best form, and discard recent failures. There Will be a big field in the Wellesley .Stakes and the clash of North and South Island form makes it particularly Interesting. The South representatives contain no - winner, but there, has been only one opportunity for them so far and several may show unexpected improvement. In the North there are winners in Brief, Screen and Sea Spi, and others with form like Carnforth, Look Again and Smart Boy. The northerners are likely to be more forward than those from the south, though this is not to say that they are better, for there lias not yet appeared, any outstanding youngster. A very even field is engaged m the Shorts Handicap. Form horses like The Champ, Beau Vaals and Scottish Dale will be in demand, while Phaleron, Neenah. Moutoa Bond. Egyptian .Rose, Koi Nagi and Palora should be prominent. Belle Fox is well thought of in Taranaki. The class in the concluding hack mile . does not look exceptionally strong. Foxlore, Come True, First Edition. Jonathan Jo, Gunyah, Straight Left and Coronace have the likeliest form. The following horses will be bracketed today:—Riinutaka Hack: Lord. Darnley and Manutere, Matapan and Pallid, Queen's Charm and Quick Decision, Ring Scarf and Sir Bradbury, Tweedsmuir and Verify.
