AMERICAN POTATOES
Sale On New Zealand Market
Conditions under which American potatoes were on sale in New Zealand were revealed by the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, in a written reply to a question asked by Mr. Goosinan (Opposition, Waikato).
Mr. Sullivan said-that these potatoes were sent to N6w Zealand on transports as supplies for the American forces. A small quantity of less than 500 tons was found to be surplus to the immediate requirements of the American forces, and was offered to the Government for sale to the public on condition that the Government replaced an equivalent quantity at some time in the future. The price at. which they were sold was fixed in relation to their quality and to the quality and price of other potatoes on the market.
It would have been most unfair to the Pukekohe growers who were marketing their early crop at approximately Gd. a pound if these American new potatoes of good size and condition had been marketed at less than Gd. a pound, said Mr. Sullivan. It was not a fair comparison to relate the price of these American potatoes to the price of locally-grown last season’s crop selling on the market at 2jd. a pound.
