Neiv Programmes At State And Majestic Majestic Theatre.—Those who remember Greer Garson In “Good Bye, Mr. Chips — and that ’ means everyone who saw that Him—wondered whether she could maintain the peaks of acting reached, there. Proof that she is able to do so is provided by ‘‘Blossoms in the Dust, winch opens at the Majestic today. Also starring is Walter Pidgoon. who gave a magnificent portrayal in “How Green Was My Valley.” Technicolonr, adds to the quality of this film, which is highly dramatic. State Theatre.—A new programme opens at the State today with “The Mexican •Spitfire’s Baby” and “Thundering Hoofs. The latter is appropriate as a race week special, for it features Tim Holt and Bay Whitley. •Excitement and adventure of that film are balanced by the comedy of Lupe Velez and Leon Errol. As a laugh tQnic for those who do not favour more dramatic entertainment this is one of the finest shows now at city theatres. King’s Theatre.—“Ball of Fire,” starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, gains its humour from the impact ot a night club entertainer on .a cloistered group of professors. Having dealt with “Sex” and “Slang,” Gary Cooper meets Barbara Stanwyck, and has. to revise liis work. She not only upsets the work on the encyclopaedia, but revolutionizes the lives of the learned men. Popular song numbers arc a feature of the film. St. James Theatre.—Near the close of a short but successful run, “This Gun For Hire” is a study in the psychopathology of' murder. A voung man. ill-treated in youth and early typed as an habitual criminal, is paid for a killing in “hot money.” From that moment he bends a.l morselesig brain to the job of killing his morseelss brain to the job of killing his employer.’ The next attraction will be “Reap the Wild Wind.’’ beginning Friday. De Luxe Theatre.—“Joe Smith, American,” starring Robert Young, with Marsha Hunt. Darryl Hickman, Jonathan Hale, and Noel Madison is screening finally tonight. The second feature is “The Girl from Alaska” in which Ray Middleton, Jean Parker, Jerome Cowan. Robert H. Barrat, and Ray Mala head the east. It is a- story of gold-mining, adventure and romance in Hie snows of Alaska.. Another big double feature programme will commence screening tomorrow, headed oy “Bad Men of Missouri.” The associate feature will be “Private Buckaroo” Plaza Theatre.— Those who saw Myrtle Tannehill and. Hale Hamilton in the stage show some years ago , will recall what a riot of comedy “Twin Beds” was when it was played in New Zealand It has lost nothing of its hilarity in its transfer to the screen; in fact, the present version h funnier than ever. George Brent, Joan Bennett aud Misctia Auer head the cast. Tudor Theatre.—“Dangerous Moonlight” stars Anton Walbrook, supported by Sally Gray and Derrick de Marney. It is a vivid story of a Polish pianist’s adventures as a fighter pilot. Also showing is the murder mystery. “Stranger on the Third Floor,” with Peter Lorre and John McGuire. Opera House. —This is Hie last week at the Opera House for “One of Our Aircraft is Missing,” a film of patriotism in oceii’picd countries and the adventures ol British bomber crews befriended by the Dutch after baling out. The men are forced to bale out on return from a Ruhr raid, and the story goes from this hideout to that, from one group of Dutch people to another. Charles Laughton in “The Till ties of Tahiti” will be the weekend attraction.
