JAPANESE POSITIONS BOMBED

U.S. Aircraft On Island WASHINGTON,, October 19.

A Navy Department communique says: “On October 14 our .dive-bomb-ers attacked enemy installations at liekata Bay (northern. Solomons). Several anti-aircraft batteries were bombed, fuel storage tanks were set on fire, and 12 enemy seaplanes were strafed and burned.

“One twin-engined bomber was shot down by Wildcats, and army Flying Fortresses destroyed a large flyingboa t.

“Four direct bomb hits completed the destruction of two of the three transports which were previously damaged and beached on the north-west coast of Guadalcanal.

“On October 17, during the morning, United States surface vessels bombarded enemy positions on north-west-ern Guadalcanal. Heavy explosions and fires followed hits on ammunition dumps. Throughout the day, our aircraft on Guadalcanal continued to attack the enemy’s shore positions. “During the night of October 17-18 Japanese surface forces shelled our installations on the north coast of the island.”
