RUMANIAN ARMY
German Soothing Syrup
(Received October 19, 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 18.
“Presumably to allay increasing Rumanian unrest, interested parties are sedulously spreading a story that all of the Axis-allied troops are being withdrawn from the eastern front this winter on the ground that they are not sufficiently reliable for defence, says the Lisbon correspondent of “The Times.”
“While this is probably uutrue, some form of soothing syrup is needed in Rumania, which, in spite of the casual t les —conservatively estiina ted at 350,000 killed, wounded and prisoner&_still has more than 20 divisions, totalling about 400,000 men, in Russia.”
The correspondent refers to reports that General Antouet'eu, the Rumanian leader, is seriously ill. He suggests that Germany might establish a protectorate if Antonescu dies.
Various other figures have been given of the total Rumanian army tit present in Russia. The Stockholm correspondent of the “Daily Express," in a message quoted on Saturday, put the figure at divisions, or 750,000 men.
