Large Concentration ALLIED AIR MIGHT IN SOLOMONS (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright.) (Received October 19, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 19. Australian land-based Flying Fortresses' have made four separate raids on a powerful concentration of Japanese warships and transports off Bougainville Island, in the north-west Solomons. Three Japanese cruisers are believed to have been hit with 1 0001 b. bombs, and a merchantman was set on fire, and seven flying-boats were destroyed or damaged. A seaplane tender and cargo vessels were also attacked with unknown results. The United States Navy Department yesterday announced that on Guadalcanal Island the Japanese were massing troops and equipment for a strong assault on the airfield. Flying Fortresses have bombed enemy troops on the island, and American fighters are operating. In all, since Saturday, the Japanese have lost 1 5 bombers and two fighters over the island, while the defenders have lost only one plane.
