WATER SUPPLY
"The warning given to the Wellington public by the chairman of tlie city council's works committee, Cr. Appleton, had an effect on Ihe draw-off of water during the past week,’ said the city engineer, Air. K. E. Luke, yesterday. “But. there is still the greatest need for care in the use of water, and anything in the way of waste is to be frowned on. “Aly advice to all people who have leaky taps is to have them attended to at once. To allow them to continue in tliat condition means an offence against the by-laws, as it is a deliberate waste of a precious public utility. . Though Wellington lias had a little rain during the past week, it has not been sufficient to fill the dams right up to the runaway, and the fact tliat. we are, in October, compelled to pump water into the service reservoirs in the suburbs, shows that we are none too well off. What we want at present, is two or three days’ steady rain, so tliat. the dry ground would get well soaked. It. is unusual for us to ( have to pumppujOctober.”
