Latest Maiden Winners

(By The Watcher.) Flying Ace, who won his division o£ the maiden at Otaki on (Saturday in impressive style, is a three-year-old gelding by Bulandshar from Lady Oratress, and was bred by Lis owner, Mr. T. A. Duncan. Lady Oratress never raced. She is by Laughing Prince from Oratress, so Flying Ace is closely related on the dam’s side to Oratrix, ■Concentrate, Oratorian and Oratory. Silver Peak Family. . Damascus, the winner of the maiden event at South Canterbury, is one of A. K. Didham’s team. He is a four-year-old gelding by Paper Money—Aspiring, by Some Boy II from that good mare Silver Peak. Making: Good. . Kinsman is making good since his wind operation in no uncertain style, and he is now being discussed as a possibility in the Wellington Handicap, in which he is on the minimum, 7.0. Kinsman is a big gelding, and might not be an easy ride tor a small boy, but with a competent lightweight up he must be given a chance. As previously mentioned he is closely related to Amigo, being by the same sire, Beau Fere, from Amante, a half-sister, by Chler Ruler, to Amigo. Improving. , , The three-year-old Dominate, ridden by Broughton, came in for support in the sprint at Otaki on .Saturday, but while he improved on his showing the previous week to finish fifth, he was never a possibility. Dominate, being backward, should go on improving. In Good I’orni. Talenta came up fresh and well alter her spell from racing and scored a really comfortable win in the Highweight at the Masterton meeting. She is to come on to Trentham for the hurdle races, in which she will again have the services of A. Jenkins. Owned In India.. . Banco, who scored his first win on Saturday, is owned In India by Sir. F. 11. Mehta, and would have been there now but for the war interrupting transport. Banco is the first horse trained by W. Bryce, Trentham. Mr. Mehta is at present with the Imperial forces. Back to norm. Though Enrich had won only two races since his three-year-old successes in the Stewards and Derby, and the last as long ago as last February, he had heralded Saturday’s success with a couple of promising efforts in his previous two starts at otaki. Otaki seems to be his favourite course as it was there that he last won. If Enrich runs to form he should be prominent at Trentham. Interference. Tuhitarata, third in the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday, actually finished second to Tranquil Star in a close finish, but there was a scrimmage near the post and the connexions of the- third horse, True Plight, protested against the first two. The protest was upheld against Tuhitarata, but not against Tranquil Star. For Trentham. Centrepoise did not compete at Otaki, but there is nothing wrong with him, and he is to run in the Wellington Handicap, in which he will be ridden by P. Atkins. Staying Blood. Son in Law blood was again in the ascendant in the result of the. Caulfield Guineas, won by Great Britain. Great Britain is a chestnut colt.by Enfield, by Winalot, by Son in Law. Enfield’s dam, Fireerest, was by Phalaris. Enfield was a Cesarewiteh winner in England, and Winalot is one of the leading sons'of Son in Law. Great Britain is out of Belgian Star, by Great Star—Belgian Myth by Hainault. Belgian Star is a sister to' Great Legeud, a well performed horse in Victoria. Great Britain cost 850gns. as a yearling, and he won three of his races last season. Sprint Rider. The Hawera lightweight, N. Holland, has been engaged to ride Koi Ragi in the Shorts Handicap at Wellington. Wellington Scratchings. Minority was scratched for all engagements at the Wellington meeting at 12.55 p.m. on Saturday; Boloyna and Strip were scratched for all engagements at 11.50 a.m. yesterday, and Look Again withdrawn from the Wellesley Stakes. New Zealand Cup. With the weights for the New Zealand Cup due on Wednesday of next week, and the cut in racing, there will be only one race intervening in which the winner will be liable to rehandicap at Riccarton if he is engaged there, and that is the principal race at Avondale ou November 7. There is no other race on the calendar carrying sufficient money to bring the winner within the scope of a penalty, nor any likelihood of a dual winner becoming liable to rehandleap. N.Z. Bloodstock in Australia. Though naturally the New Zealand interest in the Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting was not an intense one this year, the result of the principal race, the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, of one mile and five furlongs, again brings New Zealand bloodstock into the limelight, as the winner, Grand Fils, is by Beau Pore from Timid. The dam, Timid, was bought at the dispersal sale of Mr. John Donald’s Westmere stud, at Wanganui, for 325gn5., by Mr. N. J. Smith, of the St. Alban’s stud, New South Wales. Timid had a colt foal at foot by Beau Pere and was again iu foal to that sire. She‘produced a colt foal,' who is the A.J.C. Metropolitan winner. The foal at. foot was named Beaucaire and dead-heated for the A.J.C. Breeder’s Plate at his first start. Mr. Donald is also the breeder of Royal Chief, the A.J.C. Metropolitan winner in 11)38, and Sir Regent,, who won the previous year. It was ■ a great pity that his Westmere stud was ever dispersed as the percentage of high-class winners it bred was very high. Yaralla, who scored easily in the Craven Plate, won last year by Beau Vite, Is of. New Zealand interest, as his sire. The Buzzard, is very closely related to the South Island sire, Battlesong, whose first yearlings will be offered for sale this season. At Melbourne the principal race, the Toorak Handicap, was won by New Zealand-bred Crojick, a seven-year-old son of Siegfried. Crojick was bred by the late F. J. Nathan, Palmerston North, and was out of a Top Gallant maro imported from Australia. Haa Improved. When first put to hurdling Strip made some 'very poor attempts at the obstacles, but that he has improved out of sight is revealed by Ills recent form.
