OBITUARY
Mr. A. F.’ H. Sutherland
The death Jias occurred, in his thirtyfifth year, of Mr. Arthur Francis Humphries Sutherland, eloer son ot Mr. and Mrs. B. Sutherland, ‘Homewood, Karori, after two months of illness. Of marked commercial ability, for the past 12 vears he had been managing director of the Self-Help Co-op , Ltd., and National Distributors, Ltd., aud he had taken a keen interest in,the welfare of the employees of those firms. Born in Wellington m January, IJOb, Mr. Sutherland was educated at the Brooklyn School, Wellington College, and Wnitaki Boys’ High School. In the early days of the organization while ne was at school, he worked beside his father m his father’s first shop in Mulgrave Street, and immediately he left college he entered the business. He became a member of the New Zealand Society of Accountants by examination. ’ When ho was on holiday in Auckland in 1929 he investigated the possibilities of the territory, aud recommended immediate extension there. Ou his own initiative he personally selected sites and opened ten shops and a warehouse within a month. He was then _l, and -the following year introduced the concern in Otago. After that he became head of the organization. The founding of the Sutherland Self Help Trust in July of last year was the suggestion of Mr. Sutherland, who made the first graut of 15000. He was instrumental in introducing, staff bonus and benefit schemes and giving financial assistance to members of the staff iu the armed forces, and he arranged for the regular dispatch of parcels to men overS °Tiie sporting interests of Mr. Sutherland included skiing—he was a member of the Aorangi and Ruapehu clubs—and yachting. He was a member of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and the Mirannir Golf Club. Mr. Sutherland was a brother of Mr. John Sutherland, the sprint champion, and of Mrs. N. R. Mackay, of WellingtoAs a mark of respect, all Wellington, Lower Hutt and Petone branches of the firm will be closed today until noon, and all other branches between 10 and 11 a.m.
