MANPOWER PROBLEMS

Attracting Pensioners To War Work Problems of manpower and essential industries were discussed at a recent' meeting of the national council of the Federation of Labour presided over by the Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr. McLagan, who is president of the federation. Members suggested tliat there was a large reserve of labour among those receiving social security pensions, many of whom were, however, reluctant to take employment because of the reduction iu their pensions which would result. It was resolved that “with a view to getting the services of persons in the receipt of social security pensions we recommend to the Government that the amount, they be permitted to earn over and above their pensions should be increased to £l7O per 1 annum.” Ministerial consideration was sought of the position arising with the transfer of workers to essential industry at lower rates of pay than they tVere receiving formerly.
