Declared An Essential Industry The Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr. McLagan, announced yesterday that steps had been taken to declare the ojierations of every goods service and every passenger service as defined in section 2 of the Transport Licensing Act, 1931, but excluding any taxicab service, to be an essential industry. He said that this was obviously most necessary to ensure the maintenance of the transport system. An adequate and efficient transport organization was vital to the general war effort, with particular reference to primary production, while essential civilian goods and passenger services required to be safeguarded. An.v dislocation or breakdown of the transport system would rapidly have very serious consequences, and the declaration would have the effect of stabilizing the labour position, said Mr. McLagan. The retention of skilled drivers would prove of material assistance in the conservation of petrol and tyres.
