AMERICAN POTATOES
Importation To New Zealand
A new twist to the potato business is the importation by the Food Controller of a limited quantity of American potatoes, which are being liberated fo the public through the pulllie markets, to be sold at a fixed price. The potatoes, believed to be Californian, are an unusually large smooth clear-skinned variety, not unlike the old-time kidney potato, minus those tiny shavings of skin. These are clean-shaven. In fact, some householders who have tried them out, state that they do not need even scraping, but simply call for a wash before putting them in the pot. They are imported in 961 b. crates, and are being sold wholesale at the markets at 36/- a crate, with a rebate of 5/- when the crate (which is very well made and strongly wired) is returned intact. At 31/- a crate the price works out at 3 2-3 d. a lb. The public is being charged 6d. a lb. Many of the potatoes weigh up to IJlb., some even Ijlb.
