CHILDREN AT ZOO
Age Limit Suggested
Following on the recent fatality when, a small boy wandered into the Newtown Zoo and was drowned in a lake there, a proposal’ came before the Wellington City Council last, night that in future children under 10 years of age bo riot admitted to the Zoo unless accompanied by an adult. Cr. IV. 11. Stevens suggested that the proposal be referred back to the reserves committee for further consideration, commenting that.tbe-Zoo-was a national ana educational place for children to attend. Cr R. L. Macalister said the matter had been seriously considered by the committee, and it was prudent to err on the side of safety. . It was pointed out that there was no longer sufficient staff available at the Zoo to give children-the supervision that was formerly possible.!Crs. B. Todd and W. Appleton considered the 10 years age limit too drastic, the latter commenting that most children eight years of age nowadays were quite competent to look after themselves at the The proposal was referred back to the reserves committee.
