MALTA’S DEFENDERS
Heavy Toll Of Raiders (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 13, Sunday nud Monday proved even greater days for Malta's defenders and even more disastrous for Axis aircraft than originally reported. During this period 19 bombers and 20 fighters were destroyed and many more damaged at a cost Of six British fighters. Practically no damage was done to military objectives. Yesterday, some of the enemy squadrons turned back even before reaching the island, and during the afternoon, at a point south of Sicily, a batch of 45 Messerschmitts turned tail when attacked by half that number of Spitfires. It is now known, says a Cairo communique, that at least 24 enemy aircraft were destroyed and about 50 damaged in yesterday’s attacks on Malta,
