SCENE OF BATTLES

Lower map shows in detail the main Solomons battle area. The marines occupy the Tulagi islet and part of Florida, and hold positions round the airfield on the fiat northern shore of Guadalcanal in the region of Koli. The Japanese have been reinforced in the north-west of the island, and the marines have pushed back the enemy westward of the airfield.

Midway between the western tips of Florida and Guadalcanal on the map is Savo Island, near where the naval battles both of August 9 and last Monday were fought. The enemy remnant after the latest battle retired under bombing in the direction of New Georgia. The crosses in the lower map denote the main stations of the Anglican Melanesian Mission.
