SPEECH COMPETITIONS
The annual speech competitions for the Scildon Memorial Cups took place recent; ]y at AVellington College. There were lo mitrics for the prepared speech eonil ctution, the judge being the Rev. I . Gladstone Hughes, B.A. The subjec was. “One of the following Counfl'ies in Relation to the Present World 3) ar, Russia; Japan, Norway, China, Czctho Slovakia Italy, United States. All competitors acquitted themselves well, the general standard being up to the best previously set Tl ?%, placJ " l s ' s o °, u leading speakers, who both spoke on the United States, were: K. H. Dudson 1, W Mr. O. U S\ e pe’rry judged the impromptu speech contest, in which there were 1J entrants K. 11. Dudson, “Zoning, was placed first, B. W. Simpson ‘ h ood Rationing,” second, and T. A. lutnej, “Taxes,” third. . All speeches were ot good quality, indicating school talent in both prepared and impromptu speaking.
