BOWLS TOURNAMENTS

Patriotic Events In Wellington

Arrangements for the three patriotic tournaments that are to be held by the Wellington Bowling Centre during the coming season were made at a meeting of the centre, executive, last night. Adopting substantially the recommendations of the tournament committee, the centre decided that each of the. tournaments should be played on two Saturdays, section play to be held on the first Saturday and the semifinals and finals.on the second Saturday. The first tournament is to be on iNoveinber 28 and December 12 on the Vi e.llington (No. 1), Kelburn (No. 1), Thorndon aiid Karori greens, and if the entries warrant it the Khandallah and Johnsonville. greens also, will be used. The second tournament is to be held on January 16 and January 23 on the Hutt (No. 1), Petone, Central and Woburn greens, and if the entries justify it the Eastbourne and Hutt (No. 2) greens also will be used. The third tournament will be held on February 27 and March 13 on the Newtown, Victoria, Seatoun and Hataitai greens, and if the entries justify it the Lyall Bay and Island Bay greens also will be used. Section play will be of five games, each of 11 ends with a penalty of one.point for killing a head. It will begin at 9 a.m. After a’ debate, which arose over a suggestion that players should play on their own greens, where possible, it was decided that an 'ordinary open draw should be made. The entry fee will be 4/- and trophies to the. value of £4, £2 and £1 will be given for the first three places in each tournament. The proceeds will be contributed to a fund for comforts for servicemen. s In response to invitations the centre decided to visit the Plimmerton club on November 1, the Upper Hutt club on November 22 and/the Paekakariki club on Decehiber 6. ■ It was. decided that a Hutt Valley, green be used in the section play of the Christmas Fours. In doing this the centre acceded 1 to a plea by Mr. W. F. Hadwin, the Hutt club delegate, .who gave an assurance that if it were announced that a Hutt Valley green would be used each day sufficient entries from that district would be received to justify it.
