950 French Troops In Madagascar

LONDON, October 12.

Allied troops in Madagascar, who are advancing along the ISO-mile road from Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa, have met with obstacles only iu road blocks. The French force remaining in Madagascar are now at Fianarantsoa, under the command of General Alfred Guillenet.

Vichy troops who were taken prisoner declare that they are “sick of this children’s war.” French sources in London state that 950 French officers, troops of other ranks, and ratings who fought against the British at Diego Suarez, have now joined the Fighting French. They represent more than three-quarters of the remaining strength of the Diego Suarez garrison. They were entirely free to make the choice between joining the Allies and applying for repatriation to France. No pressure was exerted on them.
