An official statement by the Secre-tary-General of China’s Supreme National Defence Council says: “The Chinese people welcome with great enthusiasm the British and American announcement of readiness to negotiate for the immediate relinquishment of extraterritorial rights in China.” Tlie statement adds: “This opens a new chapter in the history of China’s relations with the Western countries, and it will- be hailed by all libertyloving peoples as a concrete example of the United Nations’ sincere efforts to create a new world order based bn freedom, justice, and equality.” Chungking reports that a Chinese force ambushed and fiercely attacked a Japanese detachment, killing and wounding 200 and destroying 12 out of 30 trucks on the road from Chienshan to Hankow.
