Spies In Chile & Argentina

(Received October 14, 9.20 p.rn.) WASHINGTON’, October 13.

The United States Government is in possession of facts which fully substantiate the charge by the Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Welles, that Axis activities in Chile and Argentina have definitely resulted in the sinking of ships, said a highly authoritative source, which also revealed the existence of an Axis spy . ring which is operating from Santiago, Chile, through agents in Cuba and Barcelona. Some of the leaders of the ring have been arrested in Havana and Santiago. The existence of the spy ring is only one of the pieces of information which show the connexion between the Axis activities in Chile and Argentina and the sinking of United Nations ships. Both Chile and Argentina have been notified that the United States cannot inform them of all the facts regarding this, but they’ have also been informed that the facts exist to the full satisfaction of the United States Government.

There is no thought that developments would lead to a break between the United States and Argentina and Chile. The United States Government does not intend to resort, to pressure, economically or otherwise, to chance he neutrality of Argentina and Chile. The source added, however, that it is hoped that sober second thought by those countries will eventually’ lead to a reconsideration of their position.
