THE RACING WORLD

THREE-YEAR-OLD FORM Reversals From Wanganui

(By

The Watcher.)

The most notable feature of recent racing has been, rhe complete eclipse of the form shown b.v the placed horses in tile Wanganui Guineas. Anyone who saw that race, and then witnessed the failure of Indian Sign against Representative last Saturday at Auckland, must have been astonished at the reversal in the displays. Nor is Indian Sign the only one who has slipped. Hippodrome, second in the Wanganui Guineas,'ran last in his only start since, while Voltaire, third at Wanganui, could not get a place in a hack race at Otakl.

Representative Improves. Representative was fourth in the M anganui Guineas, where it was thought that the state of the going was against him. Wnb a soft track on Saturday at .Ellerslie he was not particularly fancied. Representative however, stripped a much better horse, looking much brighter and not oo tucked up as he did at Marton, and he proved that be was better b.v his decisive win. Beau Vaals again failed to run out the milo, after making the pace for six furlongs, and it seems clear that he will be only a sprinter. Representative, pn the other hand, will definitely stay, but there is no cause yet to hall him as equal to some of the great three-year-olds of the past.

On the Small Side. Bonny I’ay had improved so much since bls narrow defeat by Representative in tne Avondale Guineas that the majority ol Aucklanders were decided in their opinion that he would reverse piaclngs. Bonny Pay did not get a chance to prove whether he could have done it or not, as the interference he met at the end of the first furlong settled his chances. Bonny Pay is only a pony, and while he has fine pace, one doubts his ability to carry a Derby weight over a journey.

On tile Up-Grade. Nizam is- definitely an improver for three-year-old races in the near future. He was backward at the start of the season, but has lately been showing more dash in private, and he ran a good race in the Great Northern Guineas, in which fie finished third. He should go on improving, and as he does not do his beet on a soft track, future conditions should also be more in his favour.

Ran a Poor Race. Indian Sign was very disappointing to his admirers. There did not appear any excuse for his failure, but the form was to much below his best that there might be a good reason for it. Last ,season no developed a bit of trouble in a fetlock, and it is to be hoped that there uas not been a recurrence.

Nothing Outstanding. There did not appear to be any outstanding two-year-old at Auckland, but the winner,' Olga’s Pal, is a good solid vourigster who knows his business. Oiga s Pal was the first yearling sold at tue national sales last January, and he went to the bid of his present owner, Mr. J. Rudslts, of Taumarunul. for JJOgns. By Man's Pal from Molten, he is a baitbrother to Night Eruption.

"one U of UC the’ beaten lot in the Welcome Stakes looked very unlucky, and will see a better day. This is Royal Glory, a sister to Orakau, owned by Mr Allan It. Kav and trained by A. Gook at Te mu'tu. Royal Glory got badly left at the start, but showed great pace when she got going; so much in tact that at the last, furlong she was up with the leaders and wae being proclaimed as the likely winner. Here, however, the effort told, and she faded out. Orakau and Royal Llorv C°m® from a great family. Bravado being bj Psychology from War Scare, by Martian Gossip, by Wallace.

Southern Juvenile. Invulnerable, who scored an easy win in the McLean Stakes at Dunedin, the first two-year-old race in the South Island, Is a brown gelding by Siegfried from Winsome Sister, by Some Boy ll—Sister Itegls. bv Charlemange 11. lie yas bred by his owner, Mr. W. Swale.

maiden winner Macedoine is a three-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Honest Maid, by Paladin from the Martian mare Honesty. Macedoine has done very little racing, having had only one start last season as a two-year-oiu, ami only one previous race this term. top weight in the Wellington Handicap next week, had a race In the Flying Handicap over seven furlongs at Ellerslie on Saturday. He raced very prominently to the straight, but was unable to hold on to the pure sprinters for the full journey. Beau Leon is looking well’ and the race will sharpen him up. Battiedress. Track conditions were against Battledress' on Saturday, and he /vas not knocked about over the concluding stages of the Mitchelson Cup. It was his first race of the season, and under the conditions trainer O. Cox was not disturbed over his failure to make a prominent showing. Northern Crack. ’ . Regal Fox looks a good horse, and his winning form proves that lie is, lint he will not win many distance races in good company if he docs not settle down better In the running than lie did in the Mitchelson Cup.

For Trentham. ■Sea-Law has been working well at Takanini and was fancied for the Mitchelson Cup. but he had the misfortune to get into the mlxup caused by the fall of Justing who got on the heels of Mountain Fox: Sea-Law will probably be one of I'. Smith's team* for Trentham.

Silara Shown Pace. The two-year-old filly Sitara (Bulaiid shiir —Stretto) showed pace in the Mel come Stakes and should improve.

Ran Well. , The lightly weighted Hinkler disputed the issue in the Mitchelson Gup for a lung wav, and was a possibility entering the straight, but he weakened in the ilnal pinch.

A Good One. . Lurd Chancellor put up a very solid effort to win his division of the Gordon IJandicap, and is a hack niuch above the ordinary.

Will Improve. m- . Phaleron, who is engaged at Wellington, raced well in the Flying Handicap at Ellerslie and finished seventh.

Tiderace’s Half-brother Sires Winners. Much interest will be taken in: the further career of the promising Tiderace colt, Boulder Dam. who scored his second win at Hastings on Saturday, for is the colt who was bought at; the National Sales a« a yearling and sent to lia, onlv to -be turned down as "unsound” ‘there by two Australian "vets. Tiderace, who is now established at the West Derby stud, has in England a halfbrother Solfo, who has made a good start at the stud in England. -At the Salisbury meeting on the one afternoon two of his fillies. Solebay and Grave Misgiving, won 'both of the races for the two-year-olds. Solfo, who was a high-class twoand three-year-old. won £15,460 In stakes and retired to the stud at a fee of Mgns. He won races up to one mile and threequarters. Another recent two-year-old winner in England, the Fairway colt. Sulphurous, who won the Amport Stakes, six furlongs. ..for Lord Sefton, in which he defeated His Majesty the King’s good colt. Tipstaff, by Fair Trial, etc., is out of Solfatara, a half-sister to Tiderace and Solfo.
