ABUNDANT HARVEST
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 11
Whereas before the war Britain was producing less than two tone of food out of every five being eaten, crops were now being grown on commons never cultivated in the memory of man, said the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Hudson. In two and a half years 3,000,000 acres had been drained. The pre-war average was 33 bushels of wheat to the acre. This year the yields ranged from 40 to 80 bushels.
"Some power has wrought a miracle in the English harvest fields this summer,” said Mr. Hudson, “for in this, our year of greatest need, the hind has given us bread in greater abundance than we have ever known before.” Still greater arable acreages were being prepared for next year.
