Fast Time In A.J.C. Derby (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received October 11, 7.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 11.

The favourites were beaten la the three principal events on the opening day of the A.J.C. spring meeting at Randwick on Saturday. Alain Topic brilliantly won the A.J.C. Derby bv five lengths from the favourite, Hall Stand, who failed to stay. Main Topic's time. 2.31 J, has been bettered in the three-year-old classic only once in 80 years. The Epsom Handicap was won by Freckles, who battled out a remarkable finish to beat Merrimba by a neck, with the favourite, Yaralla, half a length away third.

Another favourite, Dashing Cavalier, failed in the Colin Stephen Stakes, which was won by Katanga, ridden by Darby Munro, who beat Veiled Thread by half a length. Dashing Cavalier's rider, J. Coutts, was suspended for two months for Interference.

The track was fast. The attendance was more than 70,000. The principal events resulted: —■

One mile and a half.—Katanga, 0.6 (Munro), 1; Veiled Threat, 0.2 (Parsons), 2; Evergreen, 0.5 (Cook), 3. Five started. Half a length; short neck. Time, 2.33.

RACING AT FLEMINGTON (Received October 11, 7.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 11.

Tuhitarata, in a brilliant Caulfield Cup trial, had an all-the-way win in the second division of the Melbourne Stakes at Flemington on Saturday. He has yet to prove his ability over one mile and a half, but showed no signs of weakening at the end of Saturday’s race. Abazed, who was second, made a game effort and’ enhanced his Derby and Melbourne Cup prospects. Pandect made a promising display, but El Golea was disappointing. Great Britain pleased his Derby and Cup admirers by winning the first division of the Melbourne Stakes. but The Trapper and Cacique as minor place-getters discounted his form to some extent. Velocity who was fifth after Tranquil Star, made a fair effort. Skipton showed a return to his best form in a brilliant effort In the Stand Handicap. Fifth last among the 23 runners five furlong? from home, Skipton finished fast and beat Hestia in the last stride. Koorenbeen was a fair third. Wilson gave a disappointing display. The V.A.T.C. committee today aunounc? ed that the possibility of a big field in the Caulfield Cup had been considered. Various suggestions had been considered and the committee announced that it had reluctantly decided that, should 'the acceptance prove too big, some of the acceptors might be scratched at the - committee’s decree. < .

SIR ALAN CURRIE DEAD (Received October 11. 7.5 p.m.) * • MELBOURNE, October 11. Sir Alan Currie; chairman of the V.R.C. committee, died on Saturday. He won the National Hurdles with Flash Jack and the Newmarket Handicap with Mala, and also owned many other good winners.
