POLICE FORCE

Annual Conference Of Association The seventh annual conference of the New Zealand Police Association was held in Wellington recently, delegates from all police districts in New Zealand attending. The conference was presided over by —- Mr. J. B. Young, who welcomed the associate Minister in charge of police, Mr. Webb, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings, to the opening ceremony.

Mr. Young referred to post-war problems that would have to be faced, and suggested that oue of the safeguards for future world peace must undoubtedly be the inauguration of an international police force working on the same preventive principles as a civil police force.

. Mr. AVebb, in opening the conference, said that he was anxious to improve the conditions under which the men in the police force worked. He indicated that there was much, to be done in this direction, and that, as far as wartime conditions permitted, improvements to buildings would be made.

The Commissioner of Police also addressed the conference and thanked the men for their loyal co-operation. He said that many extra duties had been cast upon the police force as a result of wartime conditions, and that extra burdens had been shouldered without complaint. The Minister in charge of Police, Mr. Fraser, attended later and addressed the conference. He expressed the thanks of the Government for the manner in whicli the members of the police force had performed their duties under difficult conditions. The conference discussed many remits forwarded by districts. Among these were requests for an increase iu the present pay and the granting of a war bonus. Also on the agenda paper was the question of the readmission to the police force on their return from active service overseas of men who had resigned from the police force to take up military service. The following executive was elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. J. B. Young (unopposed) ; vice-presi-dent, Mr. G. J. Paine (unopposed); management committee, Messrs. AV. H. Andrews, J. C. Fletcher. AA’ C. Harper, F. H. Healey, AV. E. Maskill. R. A. Morris, J. M. Poiuton, C. H. Reardon, and M. Rolls.
