Its Sphere Of Influence In Wellington
A summary of the Wellington Y.W.C.A.’s thirty-sixth annual report shows that much worthwhile work has been accomplished during the year for some hundreds of women and girls. The association has endeavoured to place its activities on a footing suitable for wartime needs and increased numbers have taken advantage of the facilities offered, proving the need for such a step. The report will be presented at the annual meeting on Monday night. Housing and food service figures given are: 198 girls at the Brougham Street residence, 68 being the monthly average; 3603 transient guests at the Boulcott Street hostel, a daily average of 25; 200 meals daily served in the cafeteria, with an additional 400 monthly for clubs and committees; many servicemen have recently taken advantage of special concessions in hostel and cafeteria rales. It has been a policy throughout the 1942 season to have frequent weekend camps for small groups of girls employed in business houses doing regular over, time. Recreation and relaxation have been offered in classes for physical education, camps and tours, in sports teams and special holiday activities for schoolgirls. Approximately 1650 women and girls took advantage of these during the year. . Hospitality to servicemen continued unabated. Girls of the Y.W.C.A. were assisted by 20 regular weekly helpers and 1000 other volunteers as well as 46 concert parties all giving yeoman service during the year in the work of entertaining men ou leave at weekends. A regular dance for W.A.A.F.’s was a weekly featur' , The premises owned by (be association were none of them a credit to the capital city, commented the report. Extensive renovations and repairs hud been necessary as well as painting. The need for new buildings in both Boulcott and Brougham Streets became more and more apparen t. Annual Gift Tea. On Wednesday at the Levin llemoiial Howe, Britomart Street, the annual gift, tea will be held. Lady Shirteliffe will preside at the opening, and there will be stalls for the sale of cakes, produce, flowers, fancy-work, and sweets. All friends and well-wishers of the home are cordially invited. St. I’eter’s Annual Bazaar. St. Peter’s Parish annual bazaar and sale of work will be held tomorrow in IVellington, and will be opened by Lady Buckleton at 2.45 p.m. The sale will -be continued at night and on Wednesday evening also with an entertainment.
