THE WOOL CHEQUE
Over £18,000,000 Last Season
For the 12 months ended June 30 last, gross proceeds from wool in the Dominion amounted to £18,172,747/16/6, according to returns compiled by Dalgety and Co., Ltd. The quantity of wool sold was 985,350 bales, of which 826,759 bales were greasy wool and 158,591 bales freezing companies’ slipe wool. ( Greasy wool averaged 12.25 d. per lb., gross proceeds being £14,498,551/17/1, and slipe wool realized 16.97Cxl per lb, totalling £3,674,195/19/5. In the 1940-41 season greasy wool averaged 12.24 d. per lb., the 800,006 bales sold realizing £13,971,978, while for the 1939-40 season the average price for greasy wool was 9.17 d. per lb. Some- of the best prices last season were: Merino, 214 d. per lb.; fine halfbred, 20d.; coarse halfbred, 17d.; fine crossbred 16id.; coarse crossbred, laid.; low crossbred, 134 d.; Southdown lambs, 163<1.; crossbred lambs, 16id. Of the 19,821 bales of wool, all greasy carried over as at June 30, 10,873 bales were held in growers’ sheds and 8948 bales in brokers’ stores.
