Report To Annual Meeting
The annual general meeting of members of die Wellington Racing Club was held in the club’s rooms. Woodward Street, vesterdav. The president, Mr. E. L. Kiddiford, was in the chair, and there was an attendance of about 40. ■ . The annual report and balance-sheet, already published, were adopted. The president, in his annual address, said that from a financial aspect, it was the best season the club had had for many years. In nine days racing the totalizator handled £Bil3.slQ—an average turnover of more than £ioo,ooo a day. the year’s operations resulted in a substantial surplus. After writing off the sum of £+7sB/11/1 for depreciation of assets and making provision for income tax and social and National Securitj’ tax to the extent of £14.500. there was in hand £OMI 1/8 for distribution to patriotic lands. The grandstands at Trentham suffered no damage at all from tlie earthquakes.
Dentils of Members. Tlie club was unfortunate to lose during tile past twelve mouths a number or old and esteemed member*. among them Miss Evelyn Harcourt; daughter of Mr. .1. B. Harcourt, who was president or the club for a long period. Miss Harcourts death as a prisoner-of-war was deeply regretted. Reference was also made to til<! services rendered to the club by the ,n, - e Dr. Harcourt-Arthur, ns honorarv surgeon, and Mr. Ralph Stewart. One alteration was proposed at the racecourse. The stewards recommended that the members’ private boxes on the maiu grandstand be done awav with lor the duration, Ute reason being that so manv seats in this enclosure were not occupied' on race days, while the remainder of the seating accommodation on this stand was taxed to Ihe utmost. The idea watt that the existing enclosure be reduced tn area and set aside for the use of members and tlieir friends, it was hotted by this means not only to provide more accommodation for the public, tint to relieve the present congestion in tlie members enclosures on tin* otlieial stand. Tito following otliee-bearers were reelected unopposed:—President, Mr, E. L. Iliddiford; vice-president, Mr. C. W. Tringham; stewards. Messrs. .1. C. Crawford, II 11. Green. W. A. torus. 11. L. Nathan arid ,T. T. Spears. Messrs. O. G. Kember and G. H Macmtirrnn were re-elected auditors
