WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

St. Joseph’s Win Yankee

Tournament

The most interesting game in the Wellington Basketball Association’s senior zA grade competition on Saturday was that between Island Bay and Wellington East. Old Girls, which Wellington East Old Girls unexpectedly won by one goal. The game was elos.e throughout, and in the early stages Island Bay were in the lead. W.E.0.G., with accurate shooting, drew ahead at half-time, and maintained their lead. Veterans were helping out, Jean Mitchell, .playing for her old team, and Joyce Jones for Island Bay. It was most disappointing that only four senior B teams considered it. worthwhile entering for the King's Birthday tournament on Saturday. A Yankee tournament was held, and St. Joseph's won, winning all three games. Island Bay lost only to St. Joseph's. In the third grade Furlor and Aotea won their matches, and so each remains in’ the lead In its own section, from which It is unlikely they will now.be displaced. The fourth grade is not so far advanced,, but Heaneys, Island Bay and Jacguard are all in the running for championship honours. Mrs. J. Jones and Miss E. Duckworth, 'Wellington candidates, obtained honours in the recent referees’ theoretical tournament. . , Next Saturday Manawatu will send two tennis to Wellington to play the third and fourth grade reps, and the senior A representative team will travel to Palmerston North to plav Manawatu and ’Wanganui. The following are the results of Saturday's play:— King's Birthday Tournament.
