HEAVY BLOWS AT JAPANESE
Wide Bombing In China CHUNGKING, September 4.
A communique issued from General Stilwell’s headquarters states that American bombers have carried out widespread attacks on Japanese communications in the provinces of Hunan, Hupeh, and Kiaugsi. Early last Monday Americans attacked 25 heavy barges laden with troops and material near Yucliaw. Heavy casualties were inflicted and a number of the barges were sunk. Seven Japanese steamers also were sunk and-another damaged, and two trains heavily damaged. Direct hits were scored on the Japanese headquarters, and also warehouses at Nangchang. Chinese intelligence reports indicate that the Japanese are withdrawing the major portion of their air force from the Canton-Nangchang-Hankow area. Military observers believe this means the Japanese are preparing to attackin othem areas and probably have insufficient planes to cover all their needs.
The Central News reports that the Chinese, is an overwhelming assault, are pressing upon Sunk!, 15 miles north of Canton. The Chinese recaptured several points 25 miles northwest ■of Canton.
The Japanese have captured Lanchi, 10 miles north of Kinwha.
General Stilwell has arrived back from India.- ■ ‘
RAIDS FROM INDIA (British Official -Wireless.) (Received September 6, 7 p.m.) ItUGBY, September 5. A report from New Delhi states that offensive reconnaissance over Burma is continuing. Japanese attempting to move into the hills have teen attacked and railways and barracks bombed. Food and medical supplies have been dropped for refugees in China.
