(By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.)

(Received Sept. 6, 7 p.m.)

LONDON, September 5.

News agency reports from Moscow say that German penetration south-west of Stalingrad has been halted after one of the bloodiest battles of the war, in which thousands of Germans were wiped out when repeatedly rushing the Russian positions in the face of terrific fire.

Moscow radio says the battlefields in front of Stalingrad are - covered with thousands of Axis dead, and hundreds of burnt-out tanks. The shelling goes on 24 hours a day, and fierce and bloody battles are at prelent in progress, with the Russians stubbornly fighting back from the flanks and holding the Germans. Moscow announces that the Russians today in some sectors north-west of Stalingrad fought offensive engagements, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. The Russians repelled an attack in another sector. The enemy south-west of Stalingrad, heavily supported by tanks and planes, launched several fierce attacks, but the Russans staunchly met the new pressure and prevented the enemy from advancing. - It is also reported that the Russians have taken the offensive on the central front, and have occupied a number of populated places. Russian planes on the central front raided aerodromes, destroying and damaging 50 planes.
