AGAR SEAWEED
May Be Found Near Wellington
Places adjacent to Wellington where the seaweed, pterocladia lucida, used in the manufacture of agar, may be found are Ohiro Bay, Houghton Bay, Titahi Bay and Pukerua Bay. A statement to this effect was made yesterday by the officer of the Botany Division of the Plant Research Bureau dealing with seaweed investigations. This officer added that the weed could be found in fairly large quantities washed up on the beaches, particularly after storms. “It is urgently needed and every sackful is worth chasing,” she said. The Botany Division will be pleased to give assistance to prospective collectors who have any difficulty in identifying the weed. The leaves are a deep, red wine colour, about a foot in length, and, when wet, have a fernlike appearance. Exposure to strong sunlight bleaches it a horny yellow and finally a pure white. Bleached or unbleached, it is equally good, but it must be dried before being packed in sacks.
