VERY RAPID ATTACK

Karlsruhe Raid Described As “Obvious Success”

LONDON, September 3.

In the clear light of a half moon, Karlsruhe was easily found by our bombers last night. Landmarks in and about the city showed up clearly. The crews saw the channel leading from the Rhine to the inland harbour and the circular boulevard' which is one characteristic of the city. Tiie fires were enormous. They blazed in the docks as well as in the town .and the smoke became very dense. One Halifax which waited till the end of •the attack to make a special report Said that the attack was an obvious success. It was one of those very rapid attacks which have lately proved so effective in confusing .the defences. During the, operation the bombers engaged in many dog-fights. The crew of one Wellington saw two Junkers explode on tiie ground after they had shot them down. The R.A.F. loss of eight bombers was a very small percentage of the total force. A German communique admits Unit the centre of Karlsruhe suffered particularly in the raid.

During the night fighters carried out patrols over occupied France without suffering loss.
