MODEL DAIRY SHED

The Low-Line Milker

The very latest in dairy sheds .was inspected in Tarauaki, one of the features being the low-line milker which has been widely introduced there during the past three seasons. This farm visited belongs to Mr. C. Trotter, general manager of a large farming organization .in Hawera. 'The farm is situated on rolling country r. few miles westward of Elthaui. The fullest use has been made of gravity, in regard to planning of both cowyards and milking-shed. AU shed waste flows down to a great double concrete tank with a capacity of 4000 gallons and from this it can, with a turu of a tap, flow into a spreader, that is, tank on wheels, and so serve to fertilize the pastures. Everything about the shed betokens much thought, devoted and sound planning. It is understood that all the best advice available- was secured. Hence it is of interest to note that the low-line milker has been installed here. The milk pipe is strongly set and well protected. Its practical value is that it is enabling milking to be carried on at a vacuum of only 101 b. pressure. » Returning from this farm a call was made to see the first low-line plant installed. This was a cheaply made conversion from an overhead plant, which cost only £7; it has, of course, no frills, but it is a sound working plant. Another call made in this neighbourhood was upon old friends Mr. Leo Quin and his-brother Janies; once among the noted golfers iu the Dominion. The former is an cx-New Zealand champion. They have little time for golf these days as they are handling unaided an 80-cow dairy herd and a flock of 1400 ewes producing fat lambs.
