E.P.S. MANPOWER
Dissatisfaction Felt In Palmerston North
PROTEST SUGGESTED
Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., September 4.
Dissatisfaction with the city's present manpower position was expressed last night by Mr. C. V. Day, Palmerston E.P.S. controller, reporting to the central committee. He suggested that a protest be made to the National Service Director. Dr. Day stated that he had prepared a list of persons whose enrolment forms were held. by bis organization and who had come within the age group liable for registration in the Home Guard. He had hainded the Home Guard authorities a list of 441 men definitely unaccounted for in the recent registration, excluding those applying for exemption on medical grounds. Regarding the latter, the authorities decision was not made, therefore he was unable to advise them if their services were retained in the E.I.S. Included in the list tendered the Home Guard were men who bad already joined the forces, yet no official notification had been received He considered that some st e' n should be devised whereby the E.L.b. would be advised in such cases, as the onus should not be on the individuals conCe Speakers stated that many men who enlisted or were called up and were later discharged as unfit were now doing nothing because they believed their obligations were finished. The controller s report added that arrangements had been made for certain units of the Home Guard to be made available to the law and order section in an emergency where guardsmen were not required to report for normal duties and suggestions had been made for extension of this co-operation to cover firewatching iii the city.
