TANK BATTLE IN EGYPT Fought Throughout Day ALLIED AIR BUTZ LONDON, September 2. Tanks have been in the new battle in Egypt, and the Allied air forces have carried out big and successful operations. Today’s Cairo /communique states: “During Monday night our forces in the northern sector made a Successful raid and took a number of prisoners. In the southern sector yestdrday our forces, including armour and artillery fought throughout the day with the enemy’s armoured 'forces' in the area between Himeimat and Ruwelsat Ridge. Tills area is north of our left flank.’’ . • The communique adds that bombers of the Royal Air Force, South African Air Force, United States Army Air Force, and Royal Naval Air Arm successfully : attacked ' targets in the battle area and in the enemy’s rear. Large-scale air operations over the battle area Were carried, out in spite of the dust, arid our bombing was intensive and accurate. At least two large formations of Stukas were attacked and the enemy was many times forced to jettison his bombs. During the day at least six enemy bombers and five fighters were destroyed in these, operations.
