DAY OF PRAYER
Third Anniversary Of War Outbreak WELLINGTON SERVICES The King’s call to prayer today, which is the third anniversary of the outbreak of war, will be responded to in Wellington by the holding of a citizens’ intercessory service at midday, and special services in the churches. The citizens’ service will be held in the Majestic Theatre between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. The mayor, Mr. Hislop, will preside and the GovernorGeneral, Sir Cyril Newall, and representatives of the. country’s allies, and of the various religious denominations, will attend. A brief address will be given by the Rev. W. A. Burley. Church services will be held at various times throughout the day. The mayor has announced that the blackout trial that is to be -held tonight will not be at a time that will Inconvenience worshippers attending the evening services. Arrangements have been made for special services at military camps and. battle stations and Air Force stations, except in some cases where it will be more convenient to allow the men to listen to broadcasts of services. At the Cathedral Church of St. Paul Holy Communion will be celebrated at 7 a.m. and 10.30 a.m., and there will be services of intercession at 12.15 p.m. and. 7.30 p.m., the midday service being conducted by the Bishop of Wellington, Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland. Services at similar times will be held in other churches of the Church of England and other denominations. The main Catholic service will be held at St. Mary’s, Boulcott Street. There will be Mass at 6.15 a.m. and 7 a.m., and a special service at 12.30 p.m., which will include a recitation of the Rosary, a special prayer for peace, a short address by the Archbishop of Wellington, Most Rev. Thomas O’Shea, and pontifical benediction. In all the Catholic churches of Wellington special Masses will be celebrated early enough to enable the laity to attend before work. A service will be held in the Synagogue at 7 p.m. z A special service of intercession will be held at. the'Dominion Farmers’ Institute from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Rev. C. H. Bycroft being the speaker.
