NATIONAL SAVINGS

Wellington Asked To Maintain Record

“Since the inauguration of the National Savings Scheme to provide funds for war purposes, Wellington city has held an enviable record compared with other metropolitan centres in attaining its weekly quota, of £SOOO on .’l4 occasions out of a possible 45,” said Mr. J.' M. A. Hott, chairman of the Wellington National Savings Committee, yesterday. The next best was Auckland with 16. It was disappointing, however, that Wellington had failed during July and August, when the city’s quota had only been reached three times. National Savings constituted a vital and important phase of New Zealand’s war effort in providing finance for maintenance and training of the country’s fighting forces. • The object of National Savings in the realm of war economy and war finance was important, and it was felt that the citizens of Wellington, with a full knowledge of tlie issues involved, would respond, particularly during September, the month of the'“Spring Offensive on the Home ’’Front,” by investing freely in 3 per cent. National Savings bonds, and by depositing regularly in National Savings accounts. By so doing not only would they be helping the war effort and at the same time building valuable reserves of their own, but also they would help to maintain the city’s proud record of previous weekly quota achievements.
