Match Shortage. The match consumption in Britain is about half what it was before the war, but a severe shortage is now expected. The output of utility lighters has reached 80,000 during the past two weeks, and it is hoped it will soon reach the target figure of 100,000 n week. Coal Output Bonus. The British Government has accepted proposals for an output bonus in the coalmining industry. The object of the scheme is to give additional remuneration to workers whenever the monthly output of saleable eonl in their districts exceeds the standard output for that district by at least 1 per cent. Bonuses will range from 3d. to 3/9 a shift.
I.R.A. Reprieves. Five of six members ot the Irish Republican Army between IS and 22, who were sentenced to death for the murder of a policeman in Belfast last Easter Monday, have been reprieved. lour will be imprisoned for life, and one tor 15 years. Huge mass meetings have been held throughout Eire demanding the reprieve, and several British members of Parliament also urged it. Expulsion of Jews. The Slovakian Government, at the request of Germany, has agreed to deport, within three months, 20,OIK) Jews-remain-ing in- Slovakia. All Slovakian birth certificates are being examined throughout the country to ascertain the racial origin of the owners. The Bulgarian Government, according to Paris radio, has approved 59 laws against Jews. All Jews in Bulgaria must henceforth wear a yellow star, and their premises must be specially marked. The Government reserves the right Io deport any number of Jews over the frontier.
