OBITUARY

Wellington August And Eight Months’ Totals

Net Customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington last month shows a decrease compared with August, 1941. Increases are shown under all other heads. For the eight mouths of the current year the position is the same. Last month’s net Customs revenue totalled £181,382. compared with £214,175 in August, 1941, a decrease of £32,793. For the eight months the figures are £1,736,002 and £1,952,422 respectively, a decrease of £216,420. Collections of sales tax in August totalled £100,697, against £98,101 in August, 1941, an increase of £2596. For the eight months the totals are £777,076 and £749,414 respectively, an increase of £27,662. Beer excise collections last month were £9963, compared with £8692 in August, 1941, an increase of £1271. _For the eight mouths the totals are £95,303 and £68,604 respectively, an increase of £26,699. War tax under its four separate heads totalled £336,515 and £124,894 respectively, an increase of £211,621. For the eight months the totals are £1,807,210 and £995,592 respectively, an increase of £811,618.

Mr. H. R. Van Borssum

Mr. H. R. van Borssum, Eastbourne, who died in "Wellington Hospital recently, was associated with the printing trade throughout his life. Born at Forbes, New South Wales, Mr. van Borssum entered the trade-in Sydney and after coming to New Zealand 39 years ago was employed on newspapers in Ashburton and Stratford. He later joined the Government Printing Office, where he worked for 28 years till his retirement about 11 years ago. lie is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. J. M. Archer, Wellington, and Mrs. W. L. Hooson, Lower Hutt, and two sons, Mr. E. van Borssum, Wellington, and Mr. H. R. van Borssum. Sydney. Mr. H. W. White The death has occurred at Waipukurau of Mr. Hugh Watkins White, of Sherwood station, near Takapau, at the age of 77. He took un land at Makaretu in 1887. Subsequently he managed various stations/ settling at Sherwood in. 1920, where he successfully farmed this wellknown estate. In his earlier years he took an active part in hunting, polo aryl steeplechasing. Mr. White leaves a widow, two sons, one in the R.A.Z.A.I!. and the other in the Royal Navy, and a daughter, Mrs. R. Inglis.
