Remission Of Duty Refused
Following the refusal by the ActingMinister of Customs, Mr. Nordmeyer, of a request for the remission of duty in respect, of goods purchased from the United States because they are not available from the United Kingdom, or other British countries, the Bureau of Importers'has circularized chambers of commerce and other business Interests urging that the time is opportune for action to is' taken by the business people of New Zealand as a whole toward obtaining first-hand representation in Washington. The suggestion is that the person selected to represent New Zealand commercial interests in Washington should have his expenses paid by the commercial community and that he act apart from the Government, though he would need to have admission to Government and commercial circles in Washington. In its letter to the Minister, the bureau’ said that if remission of duty were not granted, selling prices in New Zealand would rise considerably, another point being that the Uniled Kingdom had instructed the New Zealand Government to order many of its requirements from the United States-
