DEATH OF MR. C. CHAAFE
A link between the older and modern schools of racing has been severed by the death at. Hastings . last week of Mr. Charles Chaafe, lie was a son of the late John Chaafe, who for many years was one of the Dominion's premier trainers. and like all the hitler's sons, he served ait early apiiretilieeship with his father before being sent later to learn a trade During his riding days Mr. Chaafe me' with fair sneeeps, but nfter learning hls tra’de he was too heavy to take up riding again and so went io Hawke's Bay, acting as foreman to John Hue, then private! trainer to the late G. P. Donnelly. Other establishments also employed him in a similar position, till eventually he was granted a trainer's licence to act as private trainer to the late Mr. Janies Landells. Fifteen years ago he gave the racing game best, accepting employment with Messrs. Nelson (N.Z.), Ltd., with whom hi? was engaged to the time of his death. He leaves two sisters. Mrs. Denis Moraghan, Ellerslie, and Mrs. Pauline Donovan, Palmerston North, and one brother,’ Mr. William Chaafe, Hastings. Five brothers predeceased him.
