Japanese Withdrawals

CHUNGKING, August 29. An official review of the 3J months’ campaign in the Chekiang and Kiangsi Provinces discloses that the Japanese have suffered 14,000 casualties at Kinwha and Lanchi, 18,000 in Chuhsien, and 8000 in Shangjao.
The present situation is as it was before the Japanese started their drive from Nanchang. The Chinese have recaptured Chuhsien and Lishui and reoccupied the great air bases, from which Japan could be bombed. The High Command indicated that a similar Japanese withdrawal was in progress in Kwangtung Province. The Chinese have captured Suichang and Tuchang.
New Chinese Offensive. CHUNGKING, August 29.
Following the capture of Chuhsien and Lishui, the Chinese have launched a vigorous new offensive 4.0 miles north of Canton along the CantonHankow railway, reports the “Central News.” The Chinese have already captured Pakong, Kweitouling and Nangchanngati and are pursuing the Japanese, who arc still retreating. The Chinese reoccupation of Lientang, Chuhsien and Tsindien has steadily widened the section of the Chekiang-Kiangsl railway recovered' and also brought the Chinese closer to Nanchang. It is estimated that the Japanese withdrawals in Chekiang and Kiangsi have already embraced over 10,000 square miles, which the Japanese systematically looted, the inhabitants suffering great hardships. It is believed that the airfields at Chuhsien and Lishui will require several months to repair. The Japanese destroyed all the installations. Tokio official radio admitted that the Japanese forces were abandoning the entire field of operations in Chekiang and Kiangsi, “having completely mastered the enejny.” American bombers on Friday made their third raid on Japanese bases which could be used for an enemy in-/ vasion in Yunnan Province. They bombed the Hanol-Laokai railway and also ammunition and fuel dumps in Indo-China. The Americans bombed Haipong today and Lashio on Thursday in au attempt to break up the Japanese concentrations and destroy their invasion supplies.
